If you're after a true adventure along some of the highest roads on the planet through some of the most dramatic of landscapes then this workshop is for you!
The Pamir Highway Adventure Workshop has a little bit of everything. From bustling markets in Osh to the planes and open spaces of the Pamir Highway to the village life in the Wakhan Valley. This is a true adventure trip that will fill your memory cards with photos that tell real stories.
DAY 1: BISHKEK – (17 AUG 2019)
DAY 2: BISHKEK – OSH – (18 AUG 2019)
We spend the day Osh, where we will meet our drivers and stock up food and water for the journey ahead.This is where the actual adventure begins!
DAY 3: OSH – (19 AUG 2019)
We leave Osh at noon toward Tulparkul. Here we will gain altitude and will spend a calm day to adjust to the altitude (±3000-4000m)
DAY 4: OSH TO TULPARKUL (KYRGYZSTAN) – (20 AUG 2019)
The road leads us up into the mountain and closer to the border with Tajikistan. Our first night will be spent near the base camp of Peak Lenin at arund 3800m altitude. A beautiful area with rolling hills, lakes and a stunning snow-capped mountain backdrop.
DAY 5: TULPARKUL (KYRGYZSTAN) TO KARAKUL (TAJIKISTAN) – (21 AUG 2019)
We catch the sunrise at Tulparkul before we head over a mountain pass towards Gorno-Badakhshan area in Tajikistan. Beautiful textures and colours of the mountain along the way make for stunning landscape photography. This road will also lead us up to over 4000m for the first time on this trip.In the afternoon we arrive in the village of Karakul. A small village with ample street and travel photo opportunities and a large lake to accompany the mountain backdrops. A photographers paradise.
DAY 6: KARAKUL TO MURGHAB VIA RANGKUL – (22 AUG 2019)
An early start takes us off the Pamir Highway onto a side road which leads us to mountain landscapes that remind of Patagonia in South America.With ample stops along the way and a constantly changing landscape, you won't find much time to put your camera away. The evening is spent in the larger town of Murghab (3600m), situated on the Pamir Highway with fairly good facilities (warm showers and electricity). This will be our base for the next 2 nights.
DAY 7: MURGHAB TO MURGHAB VIA THE PSHART VALLEY– (23 AUG 2019)
Today we hike! Our drivers will take us up the Pshart Valley from where we are dropped off and we hike over a pass (4700m) and where they will meet us on the other end around 6-7 hours later. From beautiful shepherd shelters to snow-capped passes, this hike will push you, but will reward you equally!
This hike is optional. If you chose to stay in Murghab you are free to explore the town and market and indulge in some street and market photography. Murghab is a vivid, rather dusty town which always makes for great light rays and street scenes.
DAY 8: MURGHAB TO JARTY GUMBEZ – (24 AUG 2019)
Again we leave the Pamir Highway for an alternate route. Early on we stop at a large meteor crater before we follow the road towards Shaimak Village and then cross over to a tiny village called Jarty Gumbez. Known for its thermal pools. A great spot for Astrophotography as well as a relaxing in the natural hot springs.
DAY 9: JARTY GUMBEZ TO BULUNKUL – (25 AUG 2019)
The following morning we will go on the search of the famous Marco Polo Sheep before we rejoin the Pamir Highway and follow it all the way to the lakeside village of Bulunkul (3700m). Where we will stay for the night.
DAY 10: BULUNKUL – (26 AUG 2019)
A rest day in Bulunkul. Today we explore the local areas on foot and catch sunrise and sunset at the nearby lakes as well as some astrophotography during the night.The village also offers some country street life scenes with unbelievably beautiful backdrops.
DAY 11: BULUNKUL TO LANGAR – (27 AUG 2019)
The road takes us off the Pamir Highway yet again. We go south to the Wakhan Valley. A stretch of land right on the border with Afghanistan. (don't worry, it's safe).We will decent from the higher altitudes to the village of Langar (2900m) and the landscape becomes noticeably greener and more alive. Trees, farmland and a dusty wind mark the Wakhan Valley.
DAY 12: LANGAR TO ISHKASHIM – (28 AUG 2019)
The road leads us further down the Wakhan Valley. Here we will have various stops at ancient ruins and fortresses from times long past. It's also a beautiful journey, what seems like, back in time to a world where everything was still done by hand. Stunning golden light and farm life make for beautiful 'Nat Geo' style photographs here.
DAY 13: ISHKASHIM TO KHOROG – (29 AUG 2019)
The final day of the adventure road trip brings us back north to the town of Khorog. Back to civilisation and all the comforts we might have missed out on in the preview days.Khorogh is a bustling town where we will recharge our batteries and enjoy a slightly better meal.
DAY 14: THE JOURNEY TO DUSHANBE – (30 AUG 2019)
A long 10-hour drive will bring us to Dushanbe
DAY 15: DUSHANBE – (31 AUG 2019)
A well earned recovery day in Dushanbe.From Dushanbe we will have our international flights (not included) out of the country and end our epic journey together.
IN THE CLASSROOM
ATTENTION: The journey begins in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) and ends in Dushanbe (Tajikistan). This means you will need to book two different flights. Flights to Central Asia are relatively cheap and most major airports in the world will get you there via Russia or China, depending on which side of the world you are coming from.
As mentioned in the itinerary, we have a further flight from Bishkek to Osh. This flight is covered in the costs of the workshop and you won't have to worry about this.
